The 1980s were wild years. The heavyweights were memorable, but way down at junior welterweight, Roberto Medina was making waves in Florida.
By 1985, Medina had racked up a record of 12-1-1 before being scheduled to face Olympic gold medalist Meldrick Taylor on ABC's "Wide World of Sports." Medina not only lost, but immediately after the fight, Medina's past caught up with him. And his troubles weren't over.

In the last few decades, Floyd Mayweather has become an incredibly popular attraction, not to mention an excellent fighter. But in 2002, it almost all came crashing down against lightweight champion José Luis Castillo.
Many still feel Castillo clearly deserved to win, while others believe Mayweather rightly took it.
On this episode of the Knuckles and Gloves podcast, author and filmmaker Brin-Jonathan Butler joins boxing historian Patrick Connor in re-scoring the fight and discussing the happenings and context.

2021 Boxing Awards

Thursday Dec 30, 2021

Thursday Dec 30, 2021

When it comes to weirdness, 2021 was difficult to top. But compared to what we were all expecting, the year was a lot nicer to boxing fans that it could have been.
Heavyweight thrills. Memorable spills. Historic chills. Alright, we don't know what chills are here but we needed a rhyme. The point is, 2021 was actually really fun.
On this episode of the Knuckles and Gloves podcast, Patrick Connor and Aris Pina join forces to cast their votes for Fight of the Year, Fight of the Year, Knockout of the Year and more.

We talk a lot of boxing history on this podcast, and we try to play it straight with getting the facts correct. But sometimes we'll stray into more fun speculation and remembering.
On this episode of the Knuckles and Gloves podcast, Patrick Connor and Aris Pina remember a number of known and not-so-known gym wars, myths, urban legends and knockdowns.

True crime episodes are back, and 1990s middleweight Reuben "Ratman" Bell is due for remembrance.
In the 1990s, the middleweight division and those around it were loaded with solid fighters. The Washington D.C. area was flush with talent, but plagued by crime. That's where Ratman comes in.
On this episode, Patrick Connor and Aris Pina team up to remember Reuben Bell, his career and much of the trouble he got himself into before dying at only 24.

The end of 2021 is poised to provide boxing fans with a lot of action, and we even got a serious upset when George Kambosos, Jr. claimed the unified lightweight championship from Teófimo López on DAZN. Stephen Fulton and Brandon Figueroa both also deserve a lot of credit for their excellent tussle on Showtime.
It was a boxing weekend to remember, without question. One of boxing's hottest divisions, lightweight, was shaken to its core, and a fight many hardcore fans counted on for action delivered in a big way. There was even some geometric calamity!
On this episode of the Knuckles and Gloves podcast, Patrick Connor and Aris Pina run it all down, from the fights themselves to a little bit of background.

Terence "Bud" Crawford is likely the best welterweight around, and stopping "Showtime" Shawn Porter may have confirmed it. Terence Crawford is also one of the best fighters in the world, without question.
Kenny Porter's attempts to steal the spotlight aside, Crawford-Porter was good. It was very good, actually. And it was the apéritifs to an otherwise eventful boxing weekend.
On this episode of the Knuckles and Gloves podcast, author Patrick Connor and boxing historian Aris Pina go through the ESPN PPV card and Friday's DAZN card headlined by Demetrius "Boo Boo" Andrade.

There can be little doubt that Terence "Bud" Crawford is one of the best fighters in boxing, but Shawn Porter isn't about to allow that claim to be chiseled in stone without violently disputing it.
Terence Crawford vs Shawn Porter is a fine welterweight fight between two of the division's best. It might not be the fight most want, but as consolation prizes go, it's very good.
This week on the Knuckles and Gloves podcast, author Patrick Connor and Compubox operator/fight historian Aris Pina preview Crawford-Porter, plus the other important bouts this weekend, like Kali Reis vs Jessica Camara, Julio Cesar Martinez vs McWilliams Arroyo and Demetrius Andrade vs Jason Quigley. 2022 IBHOF Ballot Discussion

Sunday Nov 14, 2021

Sunday Nov 14, 2021

Autum doesn't just mean colder weather, warmer clothes and leaves changing color. It's IBHOF season, or that time of year when International Boxing Hall of Fame voters submit their picks for who they believe should be inducted the following June in Canastota, New York.
There are a lot of boxing podcasts, but not many with two IBHOF voters.
On this episode of the Knuckles and Gloves podcast, fight historians and IBHOF voters Patrick Connor and Aris Pina team up to justify their picks for the 2022 induction and run down a bit of the ballot.

Victor Morales, Jr. Interview

Wednesday Nov 10, 2021

Wednesday Nov 10, 2021

Undefeated prospect Victor Morales, Jr. might only be 15-0 as a professional, but extensive amateur experience, the right connections and, most importantly, hard work, have placed him in a much better position than most.
The Pacific Northwest isn't often thought of as a boxing haven, even if it once was years ago. But there's talent in the PNW, and Victor Morales, Jr. is proof of that.
On this episode of the Knuckles and Gloves podcast, Victor joins Patrick Connor to discuss a handful of things between training sessions at the Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles.
