When you think Pernell Whitaker, you generally think defense, not brutal, late-rounds knockouts. But against Diosbelys Hurtado in 1997, that's what we got.
Faced with getting a big fight with Oscar de la Hoya, Whitaker, for some reason, took on Hurtado on HBO.
After trailing on all three cards through 10 tedious and foul-filled rounds, Whitaker knew what he needed to do and did it.
On this episode of the Knuckles and Gloves podcast, listen to some of the back story of the fight as we pass its anniversary.

There's something about 1970s and 80s heavyweights that made for good entertainment, from top to bottom. But one figher, Bill Sharkey, had his own story, complete with a mysterious and gruesome ending.
Years after Sharkey's boxing career ended, his body was found in the woods along the New Jersey and Pennsylvania border. His murder has never been solved.
On this episode of the Knuckles and Gloves podcast, Patrick Connor and Aris Pina remember Sharkey's career and go over the few details about his death.

In a sport as polarizing as boxing can be, there are few fights that cause arguments and disputes the way Ray Leonard's victory over middleweight king Marvelous Marvin Hagler still does now, 35 years later.
While "Sugar" Ray has always been fairly popular, Hagler's appeal has only grown in recent decades. Did Leonard deserve the win? Was Hagler robbed?
On this episode of the Knuckles and Gloves podcast, the answers to those questions from Patrick Connor and Brin-Jonathan Butler might just surprise you!

The 1980s were wild years. The heavyweights were memorable, but way down at junior welterweight, Roberto Medina was making waves in Florida.
By 1985, Medina had racked up a record of 12-1-1 before being scheduled to face Olympic gold medalist Meldrick Taylor on ABC's "Wide World of Sports." Medina not only lost, but immediately after the fight, Medina's past caught up with him. And his troubles weren't over.

In the last few decades, Floyd Mayweather has become an incredibly popular attraction, not to mention an excellent fighter. But in 2002, it almost all came crashing down against lightweight champion José Luis Castillo.
Many still feel Castillo clearly deserved to win, while others believe Mayweather rightly took it.
On this episode of the Knuckles and Gloves podcast, author and filmmaker Brin-Jonathan Butler joins boxing historian Patrick Connor in re-scoring the fight and discussing the happenings and context.

When it comes to weirdness, 2021 was difficult to top. But compared to what we were all expecting, the year was a lot nicer to boxing fans that it could have been.
Heavyweight thrills. Memorable spills. Historic chills. Alright, we don't know what chills are here but we needed a rhyme. The point is, 2021 was actually really fun.
On this episode of the Knuckles and Gloves podcast, Patrick Connor and Aris Pina join forces to cast their votes for Fight of the Year, Fight of the Year, Knockout of the Year and more.

True crime episodes are back, and 1990s middleweight Reuben "Ratman" Bell is due for remembrance.

On this episode, Patrick Connor and Aris Pina team up to remember Reuben Bell, his career and much of the trouble he got himself into before dying at only 24.

The end of 2021 is poised to provide boxing fans with a lot of action, and we even got a serious upset when George Kambosos, Jr. claimed the unified lightweight championship from Teófimo López on DAZN. Stephen Fulton and Brandon Figueroa both also deserve a lot of credit for their excellent tussle on Showtime.
It was a boxing weekend to remember, without question. One of boxing's hottest divisions, lightweight, was shaken to its core, and a fight many hardcore fans counted on for action delivered in a big way. There was even some geometric calamity!
On this episode of the Knuckles and Gloves podcast, Patrick Connor and Aris Pina run it all down, from the fights themselves to a little bit of background.
