2017 isn't letting up much, and for boxing fans that's mostly been a good thing. This coming weekend, HBO airs what is almost sure to be an entertaining fight in Miguel Berchelt vs Takashi Miura, iTV presents a solid card headlined by Chris Eubank Jr. and Arthur Abraham, and FOX provides diversion with Omar Figueroa vs Robert Guerrero.
One fight may be five-star, but it's kind of a quantity over quality thing. Still, it's good enough to not complain.
But also in need of some addressing: Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor kicked off the press tour for their spectacle this week, and it was...a thing. We'll discuss it all!

Boxing is a sport that seems to actually welcome controversy at times, and last weekend's Andre Ward vs Sergey Kovalev PPV event confirmed it. There's just something about a sideshow spectacle that nobody can walk away from or ignore, and boxing's good at it.
This week on Knuckles and Gloves Boxing Radio's history edition, Compubox operator Aris Pina and writer/historian Patrick Connor remember some of the most controversial fight finishes ever. From Ad Wolgast vs Mexican Joe Rivers in 1912, to Evander Holyfield vs Mike Tyson II in 1997, and back on to Max Schmeling vs Jack Sharkey I in 1930... Like we said, "most controversial fight finishes EVER." Those and more.

The debate of whether or not Andre Ward pegged Sergey Kovalev with repeated low blows has been ongoing since the fight ended, and it shows no sign of letting up all that soon. But Ward's win over Kovalev is officially tabbed a TKO, and unless something changes, it's one of the bigger wins of his career.
This week on Knuckles and Gloves Boxing Radio, author and filmmaked Brin-Jonathan Butler again joins boxing historian Patrick Connor in recapping the action and dissecting the controversy.
And don't be alarmed if there's some Floyd Mayweather vs Conor McGregor discussion. Also, don't harm us.

Let's face it: we all would like to attend the International Boxing Hall of Fame Induction Weekend ceremonies every year. Not all of us can. Luckily, one of us at Knuckles and Gloves Boxing Radio can, and did!
The IBHOF is the best-known of boxing halls of fame and considered the most important to gain recognition by. This year legends like Evander Holyfield, Marco Antonio Barrera and Johnny Tapia made it in, as did long-time broadcasters and non-participants Steve Farhood and Barry Tompkins. It was a huge year for the IBHOF, and boxing.
This week on KGB Radio, Compubox operator and historian Aris Pina recalls his visit to the ceremony along with writer/historian Patrick Connor.

Andre Ward's win over Sergey Kovalev was one of the most controversial moments of 2016. Despite hitting the deck in round 2, Ward was awarded a close unanimous decision over the Russian light heavyweight. A rematch had to happen, and this weekend, it is.
This week on Knuckles and Gloves Boxing Radio, author and filmmaker Brin-Jonathan Butler joins historian Patrick Connor in breaking the rematch down and attempting to answer various questions. For instance, can Ward find a way to win against a version of Kovalev that seems pissed off? Is Kovalev a racist? Does that have anything at all to do with how the fight may turn out? Has this fight been a difficult sell? Can the Pay-Per-View be even remotely successful?

We're smack in the middle of a bunch of action this year, and so far 2017 is the anti-2016 and that is something we needed. We have fighters traveling to different countries in their quests for riches and greatness, and we've also seen some of the darker things that come with boxing, like bunk disqualifications and post-fight fouls.
For instance, this weekend welterweight Errol Spence, Jr. travels to Sheffield, Yorkshire to fight Kell Brook, accounting for the "fighters traveling abroad" part. But last weekend, Andre Dirrell's uncle Leon Lawson decked Jose Uzcategui with a sucker punch after their fight ended prematurely on a foul. These aren't weird times. This is just boxing.
And this week on the boxing history edition of Knuckles and Gloves Boxing Radio, Compubox operator Aris Pina and writer/historian Patrick Connor team up to discuss these topics and their places in boxing history.

2017 just continues to move forward with worthwhile fights, though not without some speed bumps here and there. They're simply a part of boxing though, and they're negated by the good action the sport has seen already this year. This weekend on Showtime, for instance, Kell Brook and Errol Spence tangle in an excellent welterweight matchup.
And this past weekend on HBO, Terence Crawford seemed to confirm his place at the top echelon of the sport with a dominant performance over Felix Diaz. Also noteworthy: Jose Uzcategui on the receiving end of a nasty sucker punch after being DQ'd against Andre Dirrell, Ray Beltran's "Knockout of the Year" level KO of Jonathan Maicelo, Gervonta Davis' easy defeat of Liam Walsh, Shannon Brigg's positive drug test, and David Benavidez's win over Porky Medina.
If we're feeling depraved enough, perhaps we'll talk some Floyd Mayweather vs Conor McGregor.

Madison Square Garden is still a beloved East Coast boxing venue after over 120 years and several iterations. This weekend, Terence Crawford takes on Felix Diaz at the venue, reminding us that some of the biggest, most exciting and most memorable fights have taken place at The Garden.
Muhammad Ali's name was chanted through the building's rafters, while little guys like Kid Chocolate and Tony Canzoneri made regular appearances in the 1930s. Henry Armstrong, "Sugar" Ray Robinson and Jake LaMotta all shed blood in The Garden.
This week on Knuckles Gloves Boxing Radio, CompuBox operator Aris Pina and writer/historian Patrick Connor talk about the outrageous, important and unbelievable fights in Madison Square Garden history.

Well, some of us had to pay a bunch of money to sit through 12 rounds of tedious, one-sided lameness for it, but Saul "Canelo" Alvarez vs Gennady Golovkin was officially announced last weekend to a chorus of applause!
Canelo-Golovkin is, without a doubt, the biggest fight in boxing on the U.S. side of the pond. It's going down in September, which may still be four months away, but this match-up will deserve all the attention it gets.
Today on Knuckles and Gloves Boxing Radio, author and filmmaker Brin-Jonathan Butler will again team up with writer/historian Patrick Connor to talk Canelo-Chavez Jr and Canelo-Golovkin.

How much boxing can we jam into a one-hour podcast? You're about to find out.
Last weekend boxing was treated to likely the best heavyweight fight since Lennox Lewis and Vitali Klitschko tangled in 2003 when Anthony Joshua rallied to stop Wladimir Klitschko in front of a massive stadium full of people. It was an excellent event, and one that some might need help making sense of. What happens now? Is Tyson Fury still a factor? Is Klitschko ready for retirement?
Additionally, this coming weekend marks the clash between Saul "Canelo" Alvarez and Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr. The Pay-Per-View event will be popular in Mexico and figures to sell well in the US, but is it even worthwhile? Will Chavez Jr. be able to safely make weight?
These issues and more will all be tackled by author/filmmaker Brin-Jonathan Butler and writer/historian Patrick Connor. You're welcome.
