Just about every boxing fan feels strongly about what happened in the Andre Ward vs Sergey Kovalev fight. Even those who believe it was a close fight seem to believe it with conviction. Maybe all the controversy isn't as bad as we think. Maybe -- just maybe -- the fact that boxing fans are emotionally invested in this fight is an encouraging sign for the future of the sport.
Or we could just be completely making that up.
But looking toward the immediate future, HBO hosts what should be an entertaining super featherweight bout this weekened between Vasyl Lomachenko and Nicholas Walters. It's a fight that's helping 2016 close a lot stronger than it opened.
This week on the show, author and filmmaker Brin-Jonathan Butler again joins writer and boxing historian Patrick Connor in discussing it all.

Boxing fans have asked for quality fights in 2016 and we have largely been denied them. Finally at the 11th hour we get Sergey Kovalev vs Andre Ward -- a matchup we've been eagerly anticipating since its announcement.
There are a few other interesting things going on this week, but mostly we just need our fix of world class fighting. Kovalev and Ward are two of the best fighters in the world, and nobody seems to know for sure just what will happen when the bell rings on Saturday night's HBO Pay-Per-View.
On this episode of Knuckles and Gloves Boxing Radio, author and filmmaker Brin-Jonathan Butler once again joins Patrick Connor of Knuckles and Gloves, The Fight City, etc. in previewing Kovalev-Ward and its undercard, as well as the possibility of Floyd Mayweather vs Manny Pacquiao II, Vasyl Lomachenko vs Nicholas Walters, and more.

Manny Pacquiao is back! But he might not be, because he might retire. Again. We're not sure, and we're not sure that he's sure either. The esteemed Filipino politician and pugilist is one of the best welterweights in the world, though, and he proved it by sounding defeating Jessie Vargas.
On the undercard of that Top Rank Pay-Per-View, Jessie Magdaleno beat Nonito Donaire and exciting Mexican Olympian Oscar Valdez racked up another win.
This coming weekend, Luis Ortiz takes on Malik Scott on HBO, while Danny Garcia faces Samuel Vargas on Spike for some reason. Both cards have interesting matchups buried beneath them, though.
Writer and historian Patrick Connor previews and recaps it all on this week's episode of Knuckles and Gloves Boxing Radio.

First, a huge "Thank you" to everyone who has stuck by this podcast over the course of the last three-plus years. The run has been incredible, and we are once again reformatting slightly. We were initially known as "Queensberry Rules Radio," then "Top Men Boxing Radio." This will be the final change, we promise.
This week on the inaugural episode of Knuckles and Gloves Boxing Radio, writer and historian Patrick Connor previews the Top Rank Pay-Per-View headlined by Jessie Vargas and Manny Pacquiao. It's a solo show this week, but this is a fight card that needed some previewing. No, it's not stellar, but it's solid.
Also on the card, Nonito Donaire takes on Jessie Magdaleno, Oscar Valdez battles Hiroshige Osawa, and Olympians Zou Shiming and Robson Conceicao make appearances. Will it be worth buying? Worth watching otherwise? Listen in to find out!

Just a few weeks ago boxing lost former super lightweight champion and whirlwind puncher Aaron Pryor. It was another rough hit to the boxing community in 2016.
"The Hawk" was certainly more than just a one-division champion; he held two wins over an all-time great fighter in Alexis Arguello, and for better or worse he became part of boxing's culture in the 1980s.
This week on Top Men Boxing Radio, Compubox operator Aris Pina and Patrick Connor of The Fight City, FloBoxing, etc. remember Pryor and tell the great stories from his life and career .

Finally it seems the last part of 2016 could be offering up decent fights. Some are yet to be made, but we could be in for some surprises.
If negotiations go well, we could be in for Anthony Joshua vs Wladimir Klitschko and Gennady Golovkin vs Danny Jacobs before the year is out. But already made are Sergey Kovalev vs Andre Ward, Manny Pacquiao vs Jessie Vargas, Vasyl Lomachenko vs Nicholas Walters and Orlando Salido vs Takashi Miura.
Unfortunately boxing also lost Aaron Pryor this past weekend.
This week on Top Men Boxing Radio, author and filmmaker Brin-Jonathan Butler returns to the show to discuss the fights above and much more with Patrick Connor of The Fight City, FloBoxing and more.

Late in 2015 we got a new heavyweight champion named Tyson Fury. Perhaps with that name it should have been expected, but since gaining the title he hasn't done much more than spiral downward in oner way or another. Nobody knows yet why Tyson Fury is totally imploding, but he's not the first heavyweight to do so.
On this week's boxing history episode of Top Men Boxing Radio, historian and Compubox operator Aris Pina and Patrick Connor of The Fight City and more talk about some of the heavyweights in boxing history that just couldn't stay out of trouble.
There will be familiar names, to be sure. Leon Spinks, Mike Tyson, Michael Dokes... Just about anyone who lived through the 1980s in the heavyweight division, and some who didn't.

When it comes to Gennady Golovkin and Roman Gonzalez's upcoming fights, we could say, and quite fairly, that neither fighter is facing the opponent most of us would wish he'd face. Blame whoever you want for it, but we would certainly prefer fights against Saul "Canelo" Alvarez and Juan Francisco Estrada, respectively.
That being said, with what we're being given on HBO this weekend, there's still not much to complain about. Golovkin and Gonzalez are clearly the most potent one-two combination in boxing today. Both men are among the best fighters in the world, and in Gonzalez's case, perhaps the best fighter alive. Neither opponent -- Kell Brook for Golovkin, Carlos Cuadras for Gonzalez -- is anything but world class. We'll just have to see what they can do.
Additionally, join Compubox operator Aris Pina and Patrick Connor of The Fight City and elsewhere in remembering Bobby Chacon, as well as discussing great middleweight vs welterweight matchups in boxing history.

The 2016 Olympics aren't over yet, but we have a pretty good grasp on how this year's boxing went in Rio. Would you call this year's Games a success for boxing? Will any of the medal winners this year emerge as stars?
Over the years there have been a ton of great stories about boxing in the Olympics. The teams, the characters, the controversial incidents... This week on Top Men Boxing Radio, that's what the show is all about. The 1976 and 1984 U.S. Boxing teams, the origin of boxing in the Olympics, countries that seem to dominate the sport at that level, and much more -- all on the menu for this week. So listen in as Compubox operator and historian Aris Pina and boxing writer/historian Patrick Connor of The Fight City guide you through it all.

We don't have much on the upcoming boxing schedule to get us through the rest of the summer, but there have been enough developments that there are still things to talk about. We hope.
This week on Top Men Boxing Radio, author and filmmaker Brin-Jonathan Butler again joins the show to talk about Andre Ward's frustratingly tame decision win over Alexander Brand last weekend, what it means for the future of light heavyweight and Ward himself, and what a potential Sergey Kovalev clash may bring.
Also likely on the agenda are Gennady Golovkin's upcoming fight against Kell Brook, Vasyl Lomachenko's negotiations with Orlando Salido, the possibility of a showdown with Guillermo Rigondeaux and much more.
