February 3, 1996: Marco Antonio Barrera TKO12 Kennedy McKinney. That means that almost exactly 20 years ago HBO debuted the Boxing After Dark series with much success. The series has gone on to become nearly legendary, and HBO's boxing programming has at times become synonymous with the sport itself.
On this boxing history episode of Top Men Boxing Radio, Aris Pina of Compubox and The Fight City's Patrick Connor talk about the various Boxing After Dark shows that have left imprints on their memories. From Ivan Robinson vs Arturo Gatti, to Erik Morales vs Daniel Zaragoza and onto his rivalry with Barrera himself. There was heavyweight action with Derrick Jefferson vs Maurice Harris too, but a whole lot more than that.

Most of 2016 to this point has been us waiting for bigger fights to get made and hanging onto every negotiation update. It's okay, though. The boxing world almost always slows down early in the year. Buck up, everyone.
Another reason to cheer up is that Brian Campbell of ESPN joins the Patrick Connor of The Fight City this week to be the resident philosophe. From "Canelo" Alvarez vs Amir Khan being announced, to Gennady Golovkin vs Dominic Wade, Andre Ward vs Sullivan Barrera, Carl Frampton vs Scott Quigg, the heavyweights and more... Campbell will show us the way.

Well that Saul "Canelo" Alvarez vs Amir Khan announcement sure came out of nowhere. How are we even supposed to react to news like this? A welterweight and big junior middleweight fighting for the middleweight title at a catchweight? It's weird. Some like it. Some don't. Patrick Connor of The Fight City is joined by Matthew Swain of The Queensberry Rules in dissecting the matchup and figuring out just how hard we should roll our collective eyes, if at all.
Also a likely topic is last weekend's sacrificial offering of Jean Pascal upon the altar of Sergey Kovalev. Was the rematch productive at all?

This weekend's HBO main event is a rematch between Sergey Kovalev and Jean Pascal that nobody really asked for and few seem to want. There has been some weird press conference drama, but otherwise we could just do without it. Fighters do have to fight, though.
As an accompaniment to this light heavyweight rematch, Aris Pina of Compubox and The Fight City's Patrick Connor, both total suckers fo fight history, talk about other notable rematches at 175 pounds.
From Roy Jones Jr. vs Montell Griffin II to Dennis Andries vs Jeff Harding II, and back around again to Matthew Saad Muhammad vs Marvin Johnson II... Plus a lot more.

What was your favorite fight this year? Krzysztof Glowacki vs Marco Huck? Francisco Vargas vs Takashi Miura?
And what was the biggest thing that happened this year? The creation of Premier Boxing Champions? Floyd Mayweather vs Manny Pacquiao? Tyson Fury's win over Wladimir Klitschko?
These questions and more need answering. And who better to answer these questions than James Foley of Bad Left Hook and The Fight City's Patrick Connor? It's okay. You can answer. We'll wait.

Roy Jones Jr has provided plenty of memorable boxing moments since his awful and disputed loss in the 1988 Olympics. From mocking opponents mid-fight to playing in a semi-professional basketball game the same day as fighting, Roy has been a recognizable face in boxing for almost 30 years now. Last weekend he was taken out brutally by Enzo Maccarinelli, who is quite faded himself. It's likely time to retire, but will Roy Jones budge?
Author and filmmaker Brin-Jonathan Butler joins James Foley of Bad Left Hook and The Fight City's Patrick Connor once again to talk about the week Brin spent with Roy and how that affected his perception of Roy as a fighter and a person.
Also on the menu: Anthony Joshua's huge win over rival Dillian Whyte in London, Omar Figueroa's defeat of Antonio DeMarco, and more.

From high school football to the highest peaks of professional sport, cross-town rivalries drive ticket sales and pique interest. There's just something about a town that happens to only be big enough for one sheriff having two of them that makes people choose sides and root accordingly. Sometimes it's geographical, other times ideological, but there's no question cross-town rivalries are popular.
In boxing, New York City alone has had countless rivalries and grudges held between boroughs, ethnicities and so forth. But they're all over in boxing. Some of the participants included Johnny Tapia, Osca de la Hoya, Benny Bass, Rinty Monaghan and more.
If you're ready to explore these various rivalries and hear about the stories behind them, quotes from the fighters and those involved, let Compubox operator/historian Aris Pina and writer/historian Patrick Connor of The Fight City walk you through the best boxing history podcast around.
